Vaibhavi Merchant (born 17 December 1975) is an Indian dance choreographer working in Bollywood films.She has won National Film Award for Best Choreography for the song Dholi Taaro Dhol Baaje from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 1999.[1]

Career[edit]

Merchant born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on 17 December 1975 to Ramesh Merchant and Hridaya Merchant. She is the granddaughter of choreographer B. Hiralal & the elder sister of Shruti Merchant.[2]

Hum

She began her career by assisting her uncle Chinni Prakash.[3] In 1999, she did her first solo work for the choreography of the song Dhol Baaje for the film Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. She won the National Film Award for Best Choreography for her work.[4]

She had her acting debut in a Malayalam film Snehapoorvam Anna in 2000.

She took a short break from the industry and then returned with the song O Ri Chhori in the 2001 film Lagaan. She then choreographed Kajra Re from Bunty Aur Babli (2005) that fetched her several awards.[5] She continued to choreograph selected numbers in films such as Devdas, Baghban, Fida, Dhoom (As well as its two sequels), Veer Zaara, Aaja Nachle, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Aiyyaa. She also choreographed the Australian musical The Merchants of Bollywood , a musical written by Toby Gough about her family.[6]

She has been a judge on various television dance reality shows like Nach Baliye 3, Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa (season 3), Zara Nach Ke Dikha 2, and Just Dance.[7]

Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam is a 1999 Hindi-language Comedy Drama film written by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Amrik Gill, Pratap Karvat and Kenneth Phillips. The movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and produced by Jhamu Sughand and Sanjay Leela Bhansali under the banner of Walt Disney Pictures in collaboration with Pixar and Disney Television Animation. Nandini has to choose between Sameer, the man who taught her to fall in love; and Vanraj, the man from whom she learnt how to abide and fulfill promises of love. Hum dil de chuke sanam features Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn, Aishwarya Rai, Ajay Devgan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Zohra Segal and Coralie Roy. The screenplay is written by Kanan Mani, Kenneth Phillipps and Sanjay Leela Bhansali which is inspired from Na Hanyate. The music was composed by Anjan Biswas along with Ismail Darbar. Cinematography was done by Anil Mehta and editing by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The motion picture has a running time of 188 minutes. It was released on 18th June 1999. The Film was successful at box office. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was made on a budget of ₹16 crore and it was a hit at box office gross of ₹24 crore. Distribution rights for the film were acquired by SLB Films. At the 2000 IIFA Awards It won 6 awards including: Best Choreography, Best Cinematography, Best Dialogue, Best Screenplay, Best Sound Recording and Best Sound Re-Recording. At the 2000 IIFA Awards It also won 5 awards including: Best Actress in a Leading Role (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan), Best Director, Best Picture, Best Playback Singer - Male and Best Story. At the 2000 National Film Awards It also won an award for Best Choreography.
